In our New York NLP Practice I work with a number of clients to help them overcome performance anxiety. Stage fright shows up in many ways that can negatively affect performance, but by using Neurolinguistic Programming techniques it can be conquered.

I worked with a client this past week who shared her concerned about hitting the high notes while performing (and has given permission for me to post this here).

Chrissy is a coloutura soprano, and easily reaches those high D’s and E’s in voice lessons and while practicing at home and yet was nervous about “going for them” in auditions or in performance.

“Part of me wants to show everyone that I can sing these notes and part of me is frightened and wants me to hold back in case I don’t make it or crack on the note,” she explained to me.

In the NLP world when one hears the words “part of me this and part of me that…” it frequently leads to an exercise called The Visual Squash.

I asked Chrissy to sit comfortable in her chair and to place her hands in front of her, palms up. I then asked her to indicate to me in which hand was the “part” of her that was frightened of performing the high notes. Chrissy thought for only a split second then smiled and said, “hmmm well it’s in this hand” (waving her left hand). “…and in this hand…?” I asked touching her right palm. “Well that’s the part of that is singing all those high notes so beautifully” she said.

I then asked Chrissy to take a moment and ask the part of her that was singing the high notes what it’s intention was. She answered almost immediately:

• Chrissy: “to show what I can do”.
• Me: “and when you have that… what else is there?”
• Chrissy: “Happiness”
• Me: “And when you are showing what you can do and you have happiness, what else is there?”
• Chrissy: “Joy!” (she was beaming by this time)
• Me; ” and beyond that…?
• Chrissy: “it’s a completeness and wholeness”

By asking these questions I was asking Chrissy’s unconscious mind to find the highest intention of this part. Next I would ask the same of the other “part” in her left hand. What I would be looking and listening for was for some kind of “mutual” higher intention of both parts. …a sort of higher common ground where both parts can move into alignment.
I touched Chrissy’s left palm and asked her to ask the part that was nervous of the high notes what it’s intention was..

• Chrissy: “Safety…it stop me from being embarrassed”
• Me:” and when you have that….what else?”
• Chrissy: “Comfort”
• Me; “and with safety and comfort…what else do you have?’
• Chrissy: “protection and ease’
• Me: “and what is beyond that?”
• Chrissy: ” A sense of wholeness”

We had reached a place where both parts had reached a mutual higher intention.
By this time in the process Chrissy was in trance (this is quite usual when accessing these inner thoughts and feelings). I asked Chrissy’s unconscious mind to bring these two parts together by bringing her hands together in her own time. I continued to guide Chrissy verbally using much of the positive language she had used during the session. I noted that Chrissy’s hands began to move together slowly and in a jerky fashion which is typical of unconscious movement and exactly what I expected to see.

As Chrissys hand came together in front of her I suggested that she bring this feeling into herself, back into her body, integrating and consolidating these new learnings. I continued the trance until Chrissy’s hands were together and over her heart.

I then brought Chrissy back out of trance and asked her how she felt different now. She smiled a broad smile and said “well now I’m ready to wholly sing those high notes with complete joy ”

The Visual Squash pattern is a fundamental NLP skill that we teach on our Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner training here in New York.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a great tool for use in personal coaching, business coaching and life coaching. The question is, how do we use Neurolinguistic Programming NLP in a coaching environment?

In fact, neurolinguistic programming NLP is a very natural tool for use in coaching because it relies on a very simple model for personal change. This is a model which is used by anyone who enjoyed personal change, self improvement, etc, and by innumerable coaches everywhere.

THE NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING COACHING MODEL

The basic pattern of Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP is as follows:

• Associate into the problem state
• Dissociate from the problem state
• Associate into the resource state
• Take the resource state to the problem state

Given a real understanding of this pattern, it becomes easy to apply in any coaching situation:

• What is the problem that the coaching client has? Are you able to get them to experience that state? If not see below.

• Can we dissociate from the problem state? How do we do this? If we can’t do this, what can we do? See below for answers to this question.

• What resource do we need to solve the problem?

• As we feel those resources, how is the problem different now?

ASSOCIATING INTO THE PROBLEM STATE

It is common for a coaching client to enter a coaching session in the problem state. However, they don’t always do so. For example they may be so cerebral that they are not able to easily enter the problem state.

Here is an easy way to associate the client into the problem state:

• When did you last feel this?
• When exactly was this?
• Where did it take place?
• What were yo seeing, hearing and feeling at that time and place?

By doing this we can begin to associate the client into the problem state.

DISSOCIATING FROM THE PROBLEM STATE

Dissociating from the problem state is normally relatively easy.

The simplest way is to ask the client how they want to be different.

Sometimes a coaching client may find it difficult to dissociate from the problem state. This is where neuro linguistic programming offers valuable tools for dissociating from the problem state. The tools which NLP offers include:

• Dissociating in space (e.g. over here – over there)
• Dissociating in time (then – now)
• Dissociating is size (that small you – this you)
• Use of metaphor (that person in the story – you)

EXAMPLE

A client walks into your office, complaining that he feels nervous when he has to make a public speech. “I get kinda nervous, it bugs me that I act this way” he says.

You notice that he has not satisfied the first step of the NeuroLinguistic Programming pattern, in that he is talking about his problem, so he is not associated into it.

“When was the last time you felt this way?” you ask. “Oh. Last week I had to give a speech it was horrible!” “Where were you, precisely?” “I was in our big conference room…I saw the faces of our clients…” You see his face fall. Now he is associated into the experience.

“And that’s how you’ve been. How do you want to be?” you ask. You notice his physiology change as he dissociates from the problem state.

“I’d rather be confident”. “And what’s it like when you confident?” “Oh that’s a real rush, I feel great!” You notice his physiology and voice tone change. Now he is associated into the resource state. Time to collapse the states.

“And as you feel that great, notice the faces of your clients in the big conference room…”

CONCLUSION

The coaching pattern is a fundamental NLP skill that we teach on our Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner training here in New York.

NLP anchoring provides a very effective method for stacking and anchoring our past resources and positive experiences. We can call upon these resources whenever we need them for golfing excellence.

The round of golf I played a few days after my first NLP course sums up my experience of using resource anchoring to build and hold together a really good round of golf. I was just so calm and composed. Despite not hitting the ball that well, I hit 16 of the first 17 holes in regulation and hit a long drive up the middle on 18. That’s when I suddenly realised what was happening and I started thinking “all I need is a par” to have my best round here. I completely lost it for 3 awful shots then suddenly remembered about my NLP skills and got back in the zone and almost holed a tricky shot from the over the back of the green.

This article takes that idea a lot further by providing a self-hypnosis script that installs that concept in your unconscious. That makes sure that you don’t have to consciously remember to use your anchor whenever you need it. Your unconscious is programmed to make it happen.

Now I’m making the big assumption here that you know how to take yourself into hypnosis – If you do, then you know what to do with the script below. If you don’t, then find someone to help you or learn how to do it for yourself or just give it a try – what have you got to lose?.;

Assuming that you’re relaxed, and whether you’ve formally taken yourself into hypnosis or you’re just sitting there relaxed, just continue with these words:

Now relax as you travel through all those wonderful golfing experiences in your memory and your imagination. Relaxing more and more, as you are seeing those courses and imagining talking with those friends and golfing partners – the people who make your golfing experience so good. If you’re not familiar with self-hypnosis, just relax, switch off the phone, turn down the light and just quietly read these words slowly to yourself.

And as you see all those wonderful golf courses, you are building an image of the most wonderfully relaxing golf course. And I don’t know if you are imagining your perfect golf course and clubhouse or if you are remembering your favourite one, while you are relaxing deeper and deeper and more and more contentedly into the armchair in your favourite clubroom. After a few moments relaxing there, you see a door and realise that it’s the door of the locker room and when I count to four, you’re going to step through it.

Relax more deeply and allow your mind to drift down to golfing heaven as one… two… three… Four! You open the door and step through and as you look around, you see your friend and playing partners and as they greet you warmly, you feel a warm glow of relaxing confidence as you know, just know deeply, that you are going to have the most wonderfully relaxing game of golf ever.

As you look around, you see another door and realise that it’s the door to your locker, even if you don’t have a locker, and as you count from one to four, you reach forward happily and expectantly to open the door and look inside, knowing there are some powerful messages there for you.

And as a result, you relax even more and allow your mind to drift down, as one… two… three… Four! You open the door and find your golf clubs, the clubs that remind you and fuel your imagination of all the golfing abilities you use to get the most out of – your rounds of golf: your relaxed grip, the stance that provides the relaxed balance and stability to your swing and that wonderful tempo that smoothly swishes the club through to a perfect finish. And most importantly, you are relieved to find those most reassuring course management skills that let you get the most out of your mind as you play.

As your mind wanders, you look deeper and deeper down into the locker and notice a special journal, real or imaginary, and when you count to four, you are going to pick up and open that book.

One…two…three…fore! And you open that special journal, the storehouse of all your most wonderful golfing memories; the greatest shots you have ever played and imagined. The memories wash over you and imbue you with a feeling of more and more relaxed confidence.

And as you step out onto the first tee, taking out your driver, planning the shot carefully and preparing to repeat the best driver shot that you have ever played or imagined. When you’re ready you step forward into your stance, you see the ball there glowing white and illuminating the area where you take your stance. It doesn’t matter now if the ball is on a tee or sitting on the tee, as you step into the glow, take your stance, swing smoothly and watch the ball sail perfectly down the fairway or to the green. And as your friends and playing partners congratulate you and you feel a warm relaxing feeling of contentment well up inside you, you bring your hands gently together into your grip and gently squeeze your hands on the club as you hang on to the wonderful feelings for a few moments, before stepping out of your stance and the residual glow from the ball, a s you feel yourself putting the club back into the bag. That’s right.

Now, you are surveying a long fairway wood shot into a distant green and you take out your fairway wood, plan the shot carefully and prepare to repeat the best fairway wood shot that you have ever played or imagined. And as you step forward into your stance, you see the ball there on the fairway glowing white and illuminating the area where you take your stance. I t doesn’t matter now if the shot is over bunker or lake, or whether it’s a more straightforward shot, as you step into the glow, take your stance, swing smoothly and watch the ball sail perfectly onto the green. And as your friends and playing partners congratulate you and you feel a warm relaxing feeling of contentment well up inside you, you bring your hands gently together into your grip and gently squeeze your hands on the club, as you hang on to the wonderful feelings for a few moments, before stepping out of your stance and the residual glow from the ball. Before putting the club back into the bag. That’s wonderful … great golf is so relaxing.

Further into the round, you are facing a mid-iron shot into a smallish green, it doesn’t matter if it’s a 5, 6 or 7-iron that you’re choosing. You are relaxed and confident as you plan the shot carefully and prepare to repeat the best iron shot that you have ever played or imagined. And as you step forward into your stance, you see the ball there glowing white on the fairway and illuminating the area where you take your stance. And it doesn’t matter if you plan to land the ball gently by the flag or caress it and let it run up there smoothly. As, you step into the glow, you take your stance, swing smoothly and watch the ball sail perfectly onto the green and finish really close to the hole. And as your friends and playing partners congratulate you and you feel a warm relaxing feeling of contentment well up inside you, you bring your hands gently together into your grip and gently squeeze your hands on the club as you hang on to the wonderful feelings for a few moments, before stepping out of your stance and the residual glow from the ball, putting the club back into the bag. You just know that’s how a great golfer plays mid-irons.

You’re now on one the large undulating greens, looking over a longish putt. And it doesn’t really matter if you are planning to play the putt, gently taking all the borrow and letting the ball just drop slowly into the hole or if you are taking a more direct route, as you confidently plan the putt and prepare to repeat the best putt you have ever played or imagined. And as you step forward into your stance, you see the ball there glowing white on the green and illuminating the area where you take your stance. As, you step into the glow, you take your stance, putt the ball smoothly and watch it roll steadily and unerringly into the hole, as you punch the air in delight. And as your friends and playing partners congratulate you and you feel a warm relaxing feeling of contentment well up inside you, you bring your hands gently together into your grip and gently squeeze your hands on the club as you hang on to the wonderful feelings for a few moments, before stepping out of your stance and the residual glow from the ball, putting the putter back in the bag. Tiger woods dreams of moments like this. Doesn’t he?

Now, imagine your next round of golf. It doesn’t matter if it’s next weekend or some other time in the future. And as you prepare to play each and every shot or putt, you see the glow of the ball on the ground illuminating the area of your stance and when you are ready to take the shot, you step into the glow, take your stance, feel the relaxing glow all around you, and as you bring your hands gently together into your grip, gently squeeze your hands together on the club, remembering all those feelings of relaxed confidence and elation. And you hit the best shot ever, continuing in this way and completing the best round of golf you have ever played.

Now’s the time to thank your unconscious mind for this self-hypnosis experience and ask that part of you to repeat this wonderful experience for you with every shot and round of golf that you play.

And as you emerge from self-hypnosis, in your normal way or by counting up from 1 to 5, you just know now that your golf is improving and more confident every time you play.

Now that’s a new experience. Isn’t it?

NLP has been a bit of a buzz word for a good few years in relation to mind reading and mentalism tricks due to the likes of Derren Brown and Cris Angel.

The actual limits of NLP is only known to people who have actually studied it extensively, like myself. Limited is the key word, as people claim to use NLP for just about everything, but us people in the know, understand what you can and cannot do don’t we?

That doesn’t stop us saying we’re using NLP when we’re not, but sometimes it’s nice to use some real NLP skills to perform our mind reading and mentalism.

So what NLP mind reading tricks are possible? Well I’ve already talked about how anchors can be used, but there are a few others too.

This one in particular isn’t strictly NLP, but it involved reading subtle body language cues so I suppose it counts.

So here’s the trick..

You show a spectator 5 playing cards, 4 of them are black number cards and one card is the queen of hearts. There are 2 versions of the trick you can use depending on who you perform it on. To one type of person you say that when they see the queen of hearts they are to think about SEX. To other people you just tell them to think about MONEY.

What you do is show them the queen of hearts first, tell them to think about sex/money. Get them to really think about it while they are staring at the queen of hearts. What this does is anchor the queen of hearts to that emotion.. I’ll explain why in a moment.

What you do them is mix the cards face down and one after another show them each card and tell them to think about sex/money when they see the queen of hearts. When you show them each card, make sure you can’t see the cards you show, but you need to be able to see their eyes.

Just by looking into their eyes, you can tell which card is the queen of hearts.. how?

Not by the reflection in their eyes. You can tell by their pupils dilating. When people think about sex or money. Their pupils dilate. When I say sex, I mean they need to really think of the act, and when they think about money, they need to imagine they have loads of it around them and to get excited.

So when you show them each card, watch their pupils and you will be able to tell which is the queen of hearts by when their pupils dilate (get bigger).

Try it out, it’s a pretty decent little trick and you can even explain how you did it after. It’s a good way to use as a build up to a really proper, stronger trick and to make them think you’re a real body language expert.

Internet marketing practices have been evolving for many years now. The strategies employed till now involve the use of SEO, blogging, social networking websites and many other tools which have been successful to a large extent. The practice of neuro linguistic programming (NLP) can also be used for developing a connection with individuals who are online. Neuro linguistic programming refers to a technology which revolves around the behavior of human beings. It helps people to take control of their behavior and also determines the right way of responding to a particular situation. The concept of neuro linguistic programming was introduced by John Grinder and John Bandler in 1970.

The concept is about the difference between a person’s reality and the person’s perception of this reality. Therefore, a lot depends on your perception of your own online business. This strategy should not be confused with “manipulating people to your advantage”, because it is not so. There are persuasion techniques which form part of NLP and this can be used for business purposes. But ultimately, the prospect maintains awareness and has 100% control of their actions.

NLP persuasion techniques can be used to attract the right kind of people to your website and towards your other online promotions. The NLP techniques take advantage of successful behavioral patterns of website visitors. Depending on the consistent profile of the visitors, the language or images on your website can be altered according to their preferences. For instance, if you have a furniture website and wish to attract a certain group of customers, perhaps from the more wealthier class, the look and feel of your website can be changed to reflect this preference. It is easy to create a professional looking site once you know the type of visitor you are trying to persuade. The right kind of people would find it extremely enticing and can relate to such graphical images and ideas presented on the website if you know to apply NLP techniques effectively.

The important aspect of NLP involves the study of the profiles of your website visitors in detail, and then creating the appropriate content to better influence their actions.

Understanding their consistent behavior is going to be of utmost significance. This leads you to generating persuasion patterns over a period of time. Another aspect of NLP techniques that is useful in website creation is anchoring. Anchoring is a technique of slowly orienting the visitor’s perspective in a way that they become inclined to buy your product or service you are offering. For instance, if you have an automobile parts website, then you can address typical vehicular issues of the visitors to start with. Then you can convey how believing in your products and services and in turn in your brand, can benefit them.

Advanced NLP skills include relating the products and services of your online business in a way that the visitor feels that they can’t live without them. This can bring a new dimension your marketing technique if used effectively.

The basic aim of employing NLP techniques is to create a desired sense of responsiveness. After certain number of days on your interaction with your visitor, you should be able to move from the information stage to selling stage. Using neuro linguistic programming strategies can help you get from one stage to the next in a quick and efficient manner.

When creating your first website, it is important to get to know the exact techniques of NLP and how to apply it into your site so that you can properly influence visitors to take the actions you’d like them to. Introducing NLP neuro linguistic programming into the graphics and content can drastically improve your conversion rates.

What are Words Worth?

Tumbling stocks and shares, crashing house prices, previously unassailable institutions crumbling into dust and unprecedented turmoil. These are just a few of the media superlatives filling acres of newsprint at time of writing. What a grim picture is being painted for 2009.

As we enter the dark cold months of the New Year filled with anxiety and trepidation is there any hope to cling to? Not if the doom-mongering British press has its way.

Newspaper journalists with a knack for exaggeration can forge successful careers out of their ability to turn a drama into a crisis with nary a thought for the impact on the national psyche. And there is a national predisposition for pessimism which means collectively we rarely, if ever, ‘look on the bright side’ except in times of dire threat to our lifestyles and wellbeing. The ‘wartime spirit’ is only seen or talked about in relation to times of extreme danger or deprivation. Goodness knows what happens to it in periods of peace and prosperity.

So is the media merely responding to our gloomy outlook or are they actually creating it? It’s possible we might change our perspective if the story was told in a different way. Try this for size: ‘Decisive politicians save nation’s vital banking institutions’. Or how about: ‘First rung of housing ladder finally in reach of young buyers’. Here’s another one to ponder: ‘Entrepreneurial new businesses thrive as jobless create their own jobs’.

A fundamental principle of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is that how we talk affects how we think and feel which, in turn, changes outcomes. There is plenty of evidence to support this view socially, politically and economically as well as in terms of individual interaction. ‘Golden ages’ and ‘political greats’ are rarely recognised at the time and are often only acknowledged in sentimental retrospectives. Our ability to appreciate the good times is undermined by measuring good fortune against greater fortune only to find ourselves lacking. And the derision which politicians are treated with must be a significant discouragement to the most gifted, leaving governance of the nation to those with thick skin but less talent.

On a personal level, more and more people are leading lonely, solitary lives, locked in depressing isolation by their own limiting beliefs, verbalised internally with viciously destructive self-talk. The celebrity culture puts tremendous pressure on the vulnerable and insecure to meet impossibly unrealistic criteria in every aspect. Meanwhile, others race round a relentless hamster wheel of competitive acquisition, seeking validation in a new kitchen or pair of designer shoes.

Much of this hectic shopping for meaningful lives is down to the fabulous skill of advertisers. They not only create brands and define aspirations but generate belief in what is worthy through the simple power of words and imagery. This is an insidious, contemporary mass-hypnosis as powerful and skilled as any religious creed in dictating desires, beliefs and acceptable behaviour. It is confirmation that NLP works on many levels, creeping unrecognised through mainstream culture.

Understandably, the power to manipulate the chatter which defines our opinions and choices is regarded with suspicion and sometimes fear. It presents the potential to exploit the vulnerable and impressionable. But it can also empower both individuals and society with motivation, vision, creativity and drive.

So let’s for a moment, as we venture into 2009, use the cynical process of spin but direct it away from commercial gain towards a fresh new concept of progress. For example, a good start would be for children to be nurtured and educated by parents and teachers aware of and responding to the cognitive differences between individuals. This is about using language to inform, support and guide according to a fairly basic sensory range of differing needs which can have a significant impact on learning ability.

Amateur parenting and one-size-fits-all teaching are symptoms of a fragmented social infrastructure where creativity is stifled and knowledge is no longer automatically passed between generations or community networks.

Then, take the economy and consider the potential benefits of a recession in clearing out all that is no longer functioning effectively. There were some gross imbalances which now stand some chance of redress. What we earn, how we spend it and who we give power to will all shift in the cataclysmic clear-out. Just like the Fire of London in 1666 cauterised the suppurating remains of the Great Plague in the disease ridden city streets, the financial calamity will pave the way for innovation and development.

On an individual level, that presents many opportunities to discover and tap into new skills. Institutions will have to be more open and responsive to gain respect and keep in business. And a better informed and more demanding public will no longer bankroll incompetence. The ‘unwaged’ may well find their benefits entitlement curtailed and public servants are very likely in for a savage cull as superfluous town hall jobs disappear from The Guardian recruitment pages. So, theoretically, it’s wake-up time for the unproductive in our society. They’ll benefit from gaining some NLP skills to convert inertia and entitlement into dynamism and motivation.

Another quiet revolution in the offing concerns the atrocious neglect of the infirm amongst the ageing population. It’s true, some of the ‘grey market’ are having a ball and are perhaps the only generation in history to have seen a continuous improvement in their lifestyle. But others are not. So watch out, the Baby Boomers are coming and they are the best educated, most dominant and influential generation ever to approach retirement age. They will not tolerate an undignified demise in a wee-stinking armchair in the corner of the TV lounge at the ‘Bide a While’ rest home. This lot invented NLP and all its derivations and they will wield their powers to awesome effect.

The ‘yoof of today’ had better make the most of their temporary fecklessness and they are destined to be one of the hardest working generations in history. The responsibility is theirs to support a massive population of dependents. In short, resourcefulness is a necessity not an option so the language of NLP is going to be a key factor in shaping their destiny for an awesome life where failure is not an option. They need all our encouragement and positive support to talk them into being fighting fit for the challenges ahead.

2009 looks set to be a pivotal year of enlightenment and rejuvenation on global, national and individual levels. It’s a year when so much of our wellbeing and stability depends on the brightest and best having the right resources to achieve transformation. In the meantime, all the rest of us had better figure out how to be the best we can possibly be to ensure we are ready and able to approach the challenges ahead positively and successfully.

How Neuro Linguistic Programming helpful

Neuro Linguistic Programming is widely known as NLP. The prediction upon the belief that, behaviors have structure and the structure of subjective experiences are included when defining NLP. It is a controversial approach to psychotherapy and organizational change. It is based upon a model of interpersonal communications concerning the relationship between successful pattern of behavior and subjective experience.

The co-finders are Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder. They think the connection between neurological processes, language and behavioral pattern can be organized for achieving a goal. The confiders promote the NLP as a psychological therapy at 1970. They used the concept for treating phobias, depression, learning disorder, psychosomatic illness and habit disorder. It shows the potential for self-determination to recover learning limitations. This concept or system then promoted to “a science of excellence”. NLP skills can be learned by anyone and can be used to improve effectiveness personally and professionally.

The conventional social science ignored NLP because of the issues of professional credibility and the lack of empirical evidence. So there is a little impact on the academic psychology and counseling. But it influenced the private psychotherapist and the hypnotherapist. They started to concern on NLP. They start to use the NLP technique to their practices.

Neuro Linguistic programming models are formal. These models allow prediction and calculation. Dr. Bandler’s created patterns are new and different from previous conventional patterns.New techniques and models had to develop.

The constitute models describe the human brain functions when it is used to teach them. It is to be noted that NLP is not a diagnostic tool. It just can apply and teach experientially.

For NLP treatment well trained Neuro-Linguistic Programmers are needed. They teach by installation, not techniques. The techniques are based upon the attitude, models and the skills. For constant generation new techniques are more effective and work faster.

Many providers suggest prerequisite courses but Dr. Bandler has no prerequisites for his seminars. Learning has no different levels. When the underlying pattern which helps to learn something is taught, the materials become accessible and have a logical extension. For example, if somebody learned how to read he can read no matter whether the article is small or big. This example is applicable for all learning things. The seminars are of different types of knowledge. It is not necessary to maintain any sequence.

Someone can understand the effects of human brain cause to verbal and non-verbal communication. It gives an opportunity to gain more control over our own neurology and better communications with others. Life coaching, management training and self-help programs are greatly influenced.

I Can Make You Play Great Golf

Hypnosis is the key to great golf. Hypnosis is the most wonderful, most incredible “rescue club” that will ever be available to a golfer. There is nothing that comes close to hypnosis. You may say “what about NLP?” NLP is absolutely fantastic; it is an application of hypnosis – it was developed from Ericksonian hypnosis and applies hypnotic principles. Many people “dumb down” the hypnotic aspect of NLP, but hypnosis is in reality what gives it its power. NLP without hypnosis would be like a car with no engine. They go hand in hand.

Why is golf hypnosis so valuable? If you agree that great golf is 90% in your mind (or even if you think it’s only 50% mental) it follows that it is at least equally important to learn how to think well in golf as it is to be able to swing the club.

Golf is a tricky game to learn. The club is long when compared to those used in other sports, the ball is smaller and the distances covered greater. It’s a difficult game to learn and requires diligence and practice as well as good hand-eye co-ordination. I think we will also agree that a few lessons with the pro are also essential to make for a better technique and more consistent application of the clubface onto the ball.

All this takes a great deal of time and effort. Once you have learned the basics you can hit that ball around the course adequately, you feel good, and then most of us start to try to get better. Once we get to a position where we realize that “I could be good at this” another element enters the equation. The game becomes more important, and more emotion goes into it. Your mind now holds greater importance in your golf game. Logic and emotions are like oil and water, and your emotions will always get the upper hand. Thus you need to know how to train your golf mind to contain and control your emotions.

Hypnosis is perfect for this. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation and so in learning hypnosis you learn how to change state in an instant. This is a valuable asset in golf. Hypnosis allows access to your subconscious mind, where instinctive patterns of thought and reactions are stored. Therefore you can use golf hypnosis to change those emotional reactions which tend to bubble to the surface and sit there, like an oily film, totally smothering your logical mind. It is very important to train your golf brain how to wash away that film of oil and think clearly and logically and you can do this with the help of golf hypnosis.

I’m sure you are beginning to see why hypnosis is indeed the key to playing great golf. How else can you control instinctive reactions? These reactions come from your subconscious mind, not your conscious mind. You have to access your subconscious mind to enable change…and hypnosis does exactly this.

Once you really get into your golf you discover how important it is to visualize your shot. Everyone can visualize, although some people think that they cannot. Whether you think you can visualize or think that you cannot, hypnosis will empower you to greater ability in this department. Hypnosis also allows your more creative mind to surface, making it easier to visualize those golf shots, adding intensity and therefore greater impact to your visualizations. Whatever you imagine you create and this can be seen very dramatically in golf; it pays to learn how to effectively visualize what you want to happen, and no what you don’t!

Now, I could go on and on and on about the ways in which hypnosis is the key to great golf but I think I have already made my point. Golf hypnosis is essential to playing well. Hypnosis is a state of mind which enables you to train your conscious, your subconscious and your imagination to work together, to work in alignment when you play golf.

I know this to be true. I am a hypnotherapist, golf psychologist and passionate golfer. I developed the GolferWithin golf hypnosis cds back in 2006 and know the results which people have achieved as a result of using my “mental skills tool-kit”. As I developed this program of golf hypnosis and NLP skills, I set out to provide golfers with an easy way in which to learn every mental skills there is in great golf. That was my intent and that is what I did. If you are serious about your golf and want to improve, golf hypnosis is the quickest and easiest way in which you will knock shots off your handicap.

Don’t just trust what I am saying. This is what Eddie Birchenough, Golf Coach and Professional at Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club has to say about golf hypnosis:

“Roseanna Leaton is a very experienced psychologist and hypnotherapist who is making a serious contribution to the art of learning golf. Her simple yet flexible methods help golfers to learn the game easily rather than being issued with complex instruction. “We don’t know what we are taught, we only know what we learn” might well be her banner statement.

As a coach of some 45 years experience myself, I have learned so much from Roseanna. How the mind must be cleared before more information can be taken in, how the subconscious does not recognize negatives and how important visualization is to the golfer. These are just a few of the subjects that I never understood the importance of over the years. Absorbing them into my coaching techniques has improved my success rate immeasurably. I cannot emphasize the value of Roseanna’s work too much and would recommend it to any golfer who is serious about improving their game.”

There are lots of golf hypnosis cds and downloads easily available to every golfer. They are a lot cheaper than a new set of clubs, and a lot more effective in improving your game quickly and painlessly. Hypnosis is the engine which powers a great golf mind.

Roseanna Leaton, specialist in golf hypnosis cds and hypnosis downloads.

With a degree in psychology and qualifications in hypnotherapy, NLP and sports psychology, and a great passion for golf, Roseanna Leaton is one of the leading golf psychologists. You can get a free hypnosis download from http://www.RoseannaLeaton.com and view the GolferWithin golf mind training cds and downloads.

Anchoring Your Life with NLP

There was some sunshine this weekend while I was writing this! At least here on the sunny south coast of England there was. I went out walking along the sea front with my partner Sara on Saturday morning and it was wonderful; the feeling of sunshine on my face, the smell of the air, the sites of other people out and about and happy, the local land train was shuttling people and their excited children back and forth from Bournemouth pier to Boscombe Pier and my senses were filled – a major event for human neurophysiology (mine anyway!)

The funny thing is, later on that evening when my friends were joking about my pink coloured forehead, I told them that I was really looking forward to summer and as I spoke, I felt the sun on me, imagined the fun I was going to have on the beach, remembered the smell, the amazing feeling of joy that I get from being there, just by anticipating it all.

A natural phenomenon we can replicate with NLP techniques. NLP stands for neuro-linguistic programming, which is just a methodology for helping make changes. We shorten it to NLP for easy understanding.

Without realising it, the time I had spent on the sea front earlier that day had acted as an anchor for the wonderful experience which immediately followed it. The next time I saw & heard the experience, albeit in my mind, my neurology went “I know what happens now” and started to produce the intense physical responses that it ‘knew’ were coming next.

In the field of NLP, an anchor is any representation in the human nervous system that triggers any other representation. For instance, the word ’sex’ will immediately trigger images, sounds etc associated with that word. The word ‘chocolate’ will trigger different associations. I am not too sure which of those will create the most intense feelings though! These words are anchors. Anchors do not have to be words, they can be a wide range of things.

With NLP, we identify that anchors can operate in any representational system (ie. sight, sound, feeling, smell, taste.)  Let me give you some examples;

Tonal: By that, I mean for example, the special way a certain person has of saying your name, like when a friend or family member says it. My mother shouting my name from the depths of my home when I was a child often signalled the fact that she had discovered something that I had done that meant trouble for me! “Adam!” often made me feel what I was in store for.

Tactile: The effect of a certain type of handshake for example, or the sensation of a reassuring hug compared to a loving cuddle. Rekindles all kinds of wonderful feelings.
Visual: The way people respond to certain items of clothing. I recently had lunch with a group of my friends from the town where I grew up and several of them commented on the jacket I was wearing. Now, whenever they see it, it reminds them of those comments and makes them smile.
Olfactory: Like when you smell a certain kind of food being cooked can suddenly have you remembering a time when you were in the school cafeteria.
Gustatory: The taste of your favourite food or the way certain foods can make you remember how you felt when you had it before. Maybe like when you were given soup and a big helping of love and sympathy when you were young and off school because you were poorly. I know every time I eat Heinz Tomato soup it reminds me of just that.
Once again, in the field of NLP, an anchor is any representation in the human nervous system that triggers any other representation. It is conceptually similar to Pavlovian conditioning (ie. bells and salivating dogs; some of Pavlovs findings feature in the field of NLP.

While the anchor I created for the sea front was unintentional, it is possible for you to use this NLP tecnique to anchor yourself intentionally. Have a go at this and learn this NLP technique for yourself……

Fistly, think of an occasion when you had a highly pleasurable, positive or enjoyable experience. See what you saw then (looking out through your own eyes), hear what you heard and feel what you felt. As you feel the sensations increase in intensity, squeeze the thumb & forefinger of your left hand gently together for a few moments, then release them. Now ‘break your state’ (Eg. by remembering what you had for lunch yesterday.) Squeeze your thumb & forefinger together again, gently pulsing them. The state will return.

To make the most of anchoring with NLP, it is important to really engage in the experience and make it wonderfully vivid in your mind and to then also put effort into recalling it when you first activate your NLP anchor for a few times. Imagine how powerful this can be when you want to feel wonderful if you are home, feeling gloomy. Instead of reaching for the chocolate, you can start to activate your “feel good” anchor.

Every time you want to get motivated to exercise, just activate your enthusiasm anchor. It is a really simple technique of NLP.

This is a simple but powerful NLP technique that can enable you to have access to the states and resources you want, when you want them. The use of thumb & forefinger is an example of a tactile anchor, but you can use any representation to anchor something for yourself or someone else.

Guidelines for setting anchors with NLP;

In order to get a ’strong’ anchor for an experience, it is important to

a) Ensure that you have a powerful example of the experience to work with.

b) Anchor in as many representational systems as possible (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, etc).

c) Set the anchor just before the experience peaks.

d) When you activate the anchor, do it accurately. Be precise!

e) With tactile (kinaesthetic) anchors, pulsing the anchor can help to maintain the experience

One of the people who came on one of my NLP training courses was particularly taken with the idea of anchoring. Shortly after the NLP training, one morning his wife offered to make him a cup of tea, and as she did so, he gently tapped the side of his cup with his ring. He repeated this the next few times she made him a cup of tea. After a while, all he had to do was tap the side of his cup subtly with his ring & she would spontaneously offer to get him a cup of tea!! Very Naughty use of NLP, Eh?! Just by creating a sensory representation (tapping the cup) that coincided with her making tea, he was soon able to use that representation as a trigger for what he wanted. He did eventually share his NLP anchoring experience with his wife and you can be sure he makes a lot more tea than she does now!

Now I know that by now some of you may be thinking “But isn’t that manipulative?!?” One answer is “Yes, so use it for doing good stuff!”
Another answer is “no.” It is no more manipulative than making yourself look good and smell nice when you go out. In those situations you are trying to get people to think the best of you and have a good response to you, a response that you are attempting to anchor through your choice of clothing, grooming and smelly perfume.

Here are some of the sorts of things that I go out of my way to use NLP to anchor whenever I see them or experience them:

- Smiles.
– Laughter.
– Excitement
– Confidence
– Good feelings
– Good performance (especially by waiters & waitresses!)
– Anything that looks good, useful or fun; Achievement and success are especially useful for stopping smoking, reducing weight or growing in confidence.
It’s happening all the time anyway:

As I said at the beginning, anchoring with NLP is a naturally occurring phenomenon anyway. You are exposed to it all the time in everything you do. Everyone is doing this stuff all the time, often without really knowing it. All I am inviting you to do is to become conscious of the anchors that you and others are setting (maybe using NLP), and to start using them purposefully to get good results, rather than randomly to get whatever you get. Use NLP with mindfulness.

Taking this a step further;

Recently, I was working with a team of related staff members with regards to doing some NLP consulting with them. I asked them how they would know that the two days had been a great success. One of them said it would have a ‘feel good factor’ and simultaneously made a gesture with both hands towards his tummy. When I repeated the words ‘feel good factor’ to him, he nodded in confirmation. Later on, I referred to the feel good factor, and simultaneously used his gesture. Instead of a nod of confirmation, I got a full physiological response, including skin colour changes, posture and energy changes…the full works. His words had been a good anchor, but the words plus the gesture were far more complete. When I used both, I got a full response. I continued to use the anchor throughout the consultation. At no time was he aware that I was using NLP & his anchors – he just had the experience of being really well understood.

You can use NLP anchors to capture and re-use positive experiences for yourself & others. Now have a go at doing this NLP exercise too…

1) Think of an occasion when you had a highly pleasurable, positive or enjoyable experience. See what you saw then (looking out through your own eyes), hear what you heard and feel what you felt. As you feel the sensations increase in intensity, squeeze the thumb & forefinger of your left hand gently together for a few moments, then release them. Now ‘break your state’ (Eg. by remembering what shoe you put on first today.) Squeeze your thumb & forefinger together again, gently pulsing them. The state will return.

2) Identify something that someone you know already does, and create a subtle anchor. Set the anchor while they are doing the activity. Later, fire your NLP anchor and see what happens. If they do the thing you anchored, then it worked!

3) When you (or someone you are with) are experiencing something you want to have more of, anchor it.

As usual, remember that this stuff is powerful so use your NLP skills wisely. As well, allow yourself to start becoming aware of when it is being used on you. Advertisers, politicians and stand-up comedians all know the power of NLP anchors and use them with great cunning (and to great effect.) Awareness with NLP is the key – have fun.

Applied psychology is gaining more recognition nowadays. Our attitudes decide what we are and hence it is essential to build a positive personality for achieving success in all the areas of life. Introducing nlp – Neuro-linguistic programming, which is a powerful tool to change the patterns of human behavior by making effective changes in body language and methods of communication. NLP helps to coordinate your thoughts, persuade others and achieve excellent results by overcoming the self-limitations. No wonder, many organizations are introducing nlp for enhancing the performance of their employees in order to improve their mental health thereby increasing their productivity.
